In the summer of Covid, football and politics, not only Italy, catalyze the attention of the Italian media, which usually run out of news in August: in the last month the Europa League, even more than the Champions, Matteo Salvini and Donald Trump are, in order, the most cited topics in the Italian media.

This is what emerges from the monitoring carried out by Mediamonitor.it, which uses technology and solutions developed by Cedat 85. Mediamonitor.it has investigated over 1,500 sources, including print media, national radio and TV and main regional broadcasters, to understand which have been, from July 26 to August 25, the topics and characters that have been talked about the most in Italy.

The Europa League, thanks to the presence of Inter in the final, obtained 21,714 citations, about 5% more than the Champions League (20,750). To stem the excessive power of the ball, with 18,116 citations, is Matteo Salvini, the protagonist of politics thanks to the utterances on the landings of illegal immigrants, the controversy with the Minister of Education Lucia Azzolina and his involvement in the trial for the Open Arms affair.

At the foot of the podium, with 15,191 citations, a protagonist of international politics: Donald Trump, in the middle of the election campaign for the presidential elections on November 3. Trump precedes Viviana Parisi (12,405), protagonist of the dramatic case linked to her disappearance together with little Gioele.

The trend of Covid-19 infections, fears of a new lockdown and measures to ensure the reopening of schools push Health Minister Roberto Speranza to sixth place, with 11,234 citations. Behind him, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and the leader of the Brothers of Italy Giorgia Meloni, respectively with 8,219 and 7,096 mentions.

Pope Francis, ninth with 6,526 citations, precedes the president of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, involved in the investigation into the supply of gowns to the Region (6,339). Franca Valeri (3,415), who disappeared a few days after turning 100, and Kamala Harris (3,184), the African American senator chosen by Joe Biden as his deputy in view of the US presidential elections, close the ranking.

The Mediamonitor.it survey shows that Matteo Salvini (2,235 citations) is “overshadowed” by Donald Trump (3,554) and Viviana Parisi (2,650), with respectively 59% and 18.5% of citations in more. Trump, albeit slightly, gets more Europa League mentions (3,536), even surpassed by the Champions League (3,923).
